Therapist Intern
Have you ever had that never-ending dream where you’re swimming and getting tired, and the shore feels like it’s getting further and further away? No matter how hard you try to push forward, exhaustion creeps in, and the place of safety and relaxation seems almost unobtainable. Life can feel that way sometimes, like you’re caught in the middle of a not-so-perfect storm, giving everything you have but still feeling further from where you want to be. The frustration, the exhaustion, the overwhelming sense that no matter how hard you try, you’re still treading water.
“You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated.” – Maya Angelou
This quote resonates deeply with me because it speaks to the resilience, we all carry within us, even when we feel like we’re drowning. Life’s challenges come in many forms, daily stress, past traumas, relationship struggles, transitions, or even the uncertainty that accompanies a fresh start. Whatever it may be, I want you to know that you are not alone, and if you’ve found yourself here, you are in the right place.
Therapy offers a path to self-discovery, healing, and growth, a way to align your mind, body, and soul so you can find peace, happiness, and fulfillment even amidst life’s hardships. It is not about fixing what is “broken” but about honoring your experiences, making sense of your struggles, and embracing the strength you already have within you. Healing is not linear, but it is possible, and it begins the moment you decide you are worthy of it.
A Little About Me
I am Megan Fikes, an LMFT- graduate student Intern supervised by Tia Jennings, and I am thrilled to get started on this journey with you. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside people in the different seasons of their lives, offering guidance, support, and a safe space to process and heal.
Therapy, in my eyes, is one of the most sacred spaces for transformation. It allows you to do the work that perhaps you have been scared to face, the work that has been lingering in the back of your mind, waiting for the right time. And while it can be intimidating, it is also incredibly freeing. I wholeheartedly believe that when the mind, body, and soul are in alignment, magic truly happens. When we cultivate self-love, become connected to our thoughts and emotions, and discover our sense of purpose, we become unstoppable. But before we can reach that place, healing must come first.
My Journey to Therapy
Like many, my path to becoming a therapist was not a straight line. Initially, I set out to become a Physician Assistant, driven by a passion for helping others. However, along the way, I realized that my true calling was not in the medical field but in the deeply personal and transformative work of mental health. With encouragement from friends, my own therapist, and undeniable signs from the universe, I shifted my path and never looked back.
Therapy is not just a profession for me, it is a deeply personal mission. As an adoptee, a military spouse, and a parent, I have firsthand experience navigating identity struggles, major life transitions, and relationship challenges. These aspects of my life have shaped the way I see the world, giving me a unique perspective and an empathetic approach to therapy.
Living with anxiety and OCD has also given me an understanding of mental health beyond textbooks and training. I know what it feels like to be consumed by intrusive thoughts, to battle the constant need for control, and to fight against the weight of overwhelming worry. Because of these experiences, I don’t just approach therapy from a clinical standpoint, I approach it with deep, lived understanding. I know what it’s like to sit on the other side of the therapy room, and that perspective informs everything I do.
Additionally, as a biracial woman, I have faced my own struggles with identity. I have wrestled with the feeling of not being “Black enough” or “White enough,” and I have encountered people who doubted my abilities or dismissed me based on gender or race. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to creating an inclusive and affirming space for my clients, a space where they can be seen, heard, and valued for who they truly are.
My approach to therapy is holistic, client-centered, and deeply compassionate. I believe that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process; it should be tailored to your unique needs, experiences, and goals. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, relationship issues, identity concerns, or life transitions, I am here to support you in a way that feels right for you.
I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can express yourself openly, explore your emotions, and work toward healing at your own pace. We will move through the process together, addressing challenges, celebrating progress, and uncovering the strengths that already exist within you.
Healing is possible. Growth is possible. And you are capable of both.
If you’re ready to take that next step, whether it’s a leap or just a small, cautious movement forward, I would be honored to walk beside you. Let’s begin your journey together.
